Jewish History. A girdle made of fine linen, used especially by Jewish priests.
((n.) The girdle of a Jewish priest or officer.)
Origin:
Early 17th century; earliest use found in Thomas Lodge (1558–1625), author and physician. From post-classical Latin abanet and its etymon Hebrew 'aḇnēṭ belt, girdle (Leviticus 8:13), perhaps an Egyptian loanword.
